Class & Style! At home with Jan Gottlieb
Hello Art Fare! This week I get to show you the home of Jan Gottlieb. I met Jan through her daughter, Cherie. Remember that killer house that I photographed my acrylics in? After we were done Cherie said, you have to meet my mom. That happens almost every time I do a profile and I love it! One person always leads to the next. So I spent a beautiful afternoon with Jan who has worked in home interior stores most of her life. That profession is evident in every room, you can feel she's had a lifetime of collecting and curating her favorite things.
Jan also brings back objects and art from travels. One of their favorite parts of the world to visit is Africa - which you could have guessed right? Their home has an African vibe for sure. And how smart to bring what you love and what inspires you home. I love when you can walk into a home and truly get a sense of the people who live there and what makes them unique.
A perfect example of how personal the art is in this home are the paintings by Cherie that are in almost every room! If you had a daughter that created such beautiful art, nothing would be better than being surrounded by it! This large piece in the living room is to die for. I love large scale!
In the dining room they installed grass wallpaper above the trim. I am so in love with grass wallpaper. It brings texture and warmth to a room. It's also been a style choice for decades, I grew up with grass wallpaper in our living room and loved it then too. It's somehow chic and cozy at the same time.
In Jan's upstairs she has an office filled with art and books. This wall of crosses I absolutely love. She collects them everywhere she goes. Sante Fe, Mexico, Peru and Africa are represented here among other places near and far.
In the bedroom Jan put together her version of an art wall of family photos. I love the complete mashup of frames, and the layered aspect, like the shelves are bursting with memories. I also love putting personal photos in one place like this, as opposed to having them all over the house.
In the master bath above I found more art by Cherie. Also, how much do you love that rich brown paint on the walls? Jan obviously has an eye for color! In the guest bathroom I found more art brought home from travels. A painting by an Ecuadorian artist and a sculpture from Peru.
I have to show you this kitchen. When Jan and her husband moved in everything in this kitchen was white. Counter, backsplash, and cabinets. Which is such a common choice for so many right? Kitchens = white. But look at how rad it looks in here with the cabinets painted this perfect grey! It completely elevates the space. What a killer style choice for the cost of a couple cans of paint.
Here in the kitchen is one of my favorite spots in the house. Some day, mark my words, I'm going to have a built-in breakfast nook with cushioned benches and a big window. Jan nails it with this large painting, it is similar in size to the window and kindof mimics another window but with art. She found that beauty at Crate & Barrel! And it's worked in 3 houses now. That goes to show that you can find art in expected and unexpected places, so always be looking!
