Where do you start? How to find art you love.
Does this sound right? You are attracted to art and how it feels to be around art, but you don't trust your taste and are scared to waste time and money on the wrong thing. You don't want your home to feel ordinary. You want it to be special, unique, a reflection of you! A place you love to be. But that's easier said than done so you either make hasty choices at big retailers, or do nothing and have blank walls. Maybe you open a catalog like Pottery Barn and think, "Well that looks good, I'll just do that." But once those items are in your home it's a let down. They don't feel the way you hoped. You actually aren't that excited about any of it. I hear this ALL THE TIME. Especially since I've been writing this blog. You want art and a home you love that makes you proud, but getting there on your own it hard. It’s overwhelming! There are so many options. Where do you start?
All of those things you've tried - those are great! Anyone should feel good about any effort they make in their home. I think you just need some direction. To narrow the focus a little. One way to do this is to look at art through your elemental sign. Each one of us falls into one of four elemental signs: Air, Water, Earth, or Fire. In my experience, these elements are crazy impactful. I've been paying attention to this for a while now, and testing it out on everyone I know! When you tap into what makes you personally tick, what hits you down deep, this is when art becomes a lot more than just something pretty. I feel so much more strongly about this than I do my astrological sign, enneagram, or any other system of deciphering people that I have found. Ready to try? Good! I love an open mind.
To give you some back story, I'll start with my own experience. I am a Water sign. And I really, really am. I have always been drawn to water. But calm water. Ocean waves crashing on shore definitely doesn't do it for me. But nothing in the world speaks to me like calm warm turquoise water (and it's where I want my ashes scattered fyi). My other favorite thing and complete obsession is POOLS. I live in Portland Oregon and I can tell you where all the pools are in this town. There aren't many, but I search for them. And every vacation I go on, I want to know if there is a pool at the hotel. Honestly. It's all I care about. I've always felt like such a freak about this, but when I discovered that I am a water sign I felt like this weird obsession and total laser focus finally made sense! And when I embrace this in my art choices, my surroundings feel so amazing!! Now I know what moves me and I can choose art accordingly. This is what I want to help others with and am going to focus on for the next few weeks.
The first sign is AIR. Libra (Sept 23 - Oct 22), Aquarius (Jan 20 - Feb 18), Gemini (May 21 - June 20) As you might imagine, Air signs love to be outside, or in large open spaces. They are also idea people. They can breeze into a situation and offer a fresh perspective. Air relates to the sky, clouds, wind, the weather, sails, kites, and mountain peaks. If you are an air sign, keep this in mind when you are looking at art. This is also helpful in designing your home! White space, natural light, nothing too cluttered. Next week I will dive deeper into the AIR sign so if you are one or are close to one, come back for that post!
Next we have WATER. Cancer (June 21 - July 22), Scorpio (Oct 23 - Nov 21), Pisces (Feb 19 - March 20) Water signs are intuitive, emotional, and imaginative people. Any of you Water signs out there please comment and tell me if this is spot on for you because IT IS FOR ME. Dreamy escapes are our jam (totally!) We are attuned to emotion and have special sensitivity. We absorb vibes from others and need to maintain personal boundaries. Imagery can be really powerful here. I use art to take me away when I'm needing that. I'll dive into Water more next week, check back!
Ok EARTH signs! Capricorn (Dec 22 - Jan 19), Taurus (April 20 - May 20), Virgo (Aug 23 - Sept 22) I love this one. You operate at a slower, more thorough pace. You are interested in what's real. You are tactile and have heightened senses. Different textures are a big thing with Earth signs. Home decor for you can be really fun because you will love having lots of textures and natural elements. Think wood, metal, plants, etc. You guys should check out my Pinterest board for the Earth sign because it is a wonderland!
FIRE! Aries (March 21 - April 19), Leo (July 23 - Aug 22), Sagittarius (Nov 22- Dec 21) Fire signs are probably some of the most exciting people you know. Spontaneous, inspired, outgoing, visionary. Fire signs hunt for things that light them up. So with art this is important to keep in mind. Fire signs tend to gravitate toward imagery with people as opposed to pure landscapes. They love and need energy. Nothing too dark or somber. They usually like bright and bold images.
Over the next few weeks I will dive into each of these signs. It is fascinating to learn not only about my sign (Water) but my daughter's sign (Fire) and my boyfriend's (Air). Keeping these qualities in mind when decorating means we can make our home feel incredible for all of us. And many of us appreciate another sign besides our own too! It's a great jumping off point for where to start with art.
You guys, I am truly so excited to dive into each sign with you! By far the thing most people seem to have trouble with is where to start - and this information is cracking the code!! You will be amazed at how easy it is to choose art that speaks to you when you come at it from this angle. Feeling overwhelmed is so normal. I think learning more about what lights YOU up personally is so important! Because it won't be the same for everyone. And then own this new information! Use it to make powerful decisions on choosing art for your home, and don't worry about what others are doing because this is where you need to stay true to you.
